Gabion Malaysia

Wire mesh baskets filled with rock for retaining walls, slope and riverbank protection, drain outlets and feature walls. Supplied flat-packed or installed and filled on site.

Overview

About gabion

A gabion is a wire mesh basket that is assembled on site, set in place and filled with hard stone. Stacked and laced together, gabions form a heavy, free-draining wall that holds back soil and resists flowing water without concrete or formwork.

Gabion boxes are used for retaining walls, abutments and boundary or feature walls. Gabion mattresses are the same idea in a thin, wide format, laid flat to line drains, river channels and slopes against erosion.

Welded mesh gabions keep a crisp, square face and suit visible landscape and architectural walls. Woven (double-twisted hexagonal) gabions flex more, which suits riverbanks and slopes where the ground may move.

Why gabion

A retaining wall that drains and flexes

Free-draining

Water passes straight through the stone, so no water pressure builds up behind the wall and no weep holes are needed.

Flexible

Gabions tolerate some settlement and ground movement without cracking, unlike a rigid concrete wall.

No formwork or curing

Baskets are filled and closed on site. The wall carries load as soon as it is built.

Natural finish

Stone faces blend into landscaping, and vegetation can grow into the wall over time.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Welded or woven gabion: which should I use?

Welded gabions give a straight, neat face for visible landscape and boundary walls. Woven hexagonal gabions are more flexible and are usually preferred for riverbanks, slopes and anywhere the ground may settle.

How high can a gabion retaining wall be?

It depends on the soil, the load behind the wall and the base width. Low garden and landscape walls are straightforward. Walls above about 1.5 to 2 m, or walls that support roads or buildings, should be designed by a professional engineer, and we build to that design.

Galvanised or PVC-coated gabion?

Galvanised gabions suit most dry, inland walls. PVC-coated gabions add a plastic layer over the galvanising and are the better choice in rivers, drains, coastal areas and anywhere the wire stays wet.

Can I use stone from my own site?

Yes, if it is hard, durable and larger than the mesh opening so it cannot fall through. Soft or crumbly rock and small rubble are not suitable.

Can you supply the baskets only?

Yes. Gabions are supplied flat-packed with lacing wire or spiral binders for your own team to assemble, or we can assemble, place and fill them on site.
