About expanded metal
Expanded metal starts as a single steel sheet that is slit and stretched into rows of diamond-shaped openings. Nothing is welded or woven, so the sheet cannot unravel, and it ends up stronger and more rigid for its weight than flat plate.
Because it lets light and air through while staying rigid, expanded metal suits almost any industrial, commercial, interior or architectural job. It keeps overhead walkways and maintenance platforms visible and ventilated, and gives security screens a clear view through.

How to read an expanded metal spec
- Standard expanded metal
- The sheet as it comes off the press. Strands and bonds sit at a uniform angle to the sheet surface, which adds strength and rigidity and gives a skid-resistant surface.
- Grating
- An expanded pattern made from heavier gauge low-carbon steel plate, with larger strands and openings. A strong, durable, lightweight surface mainly for foot traffic, and for heavier loads when properly supported.
- Mesh size (SWD × LWD)
- The actual size of the diamond opening, measured from a point to the matching point on the next diamond.
- SWD
- Short Way of Design: the nominal size across the short direction of the diamond.
- LWD
- Long Way of Design: the nominal size along the long direction of the diamond.
- Thickness
- The gauge of the sheet before it is expanded.
- Strand width
- The amount of metal fed under the die to form one strand.

Frequently asked
What is the difference between SWD and LWD?
Each diamond opening has a short and a long direction. SWD (Short Way of Design) is the size across the short direction and LWD (Long Way of Design) is the size along the long direction. A 22 × 57 mesh has a 22 mm SWD and a 57 mm LWD.
Which range should I choose?
For screens, grilles, guards and decorative panels, choose Security & Decorative Mesh. For walking surfaces, platforms and heavy-duty screening, choose Macro & Walkway Mesh.
What sheet size do you stock?
Our standard sheet is 4 ft × 8 ft. Ask us if you need a different size.
How do I order?
Quote the code number from our tables and the number of sheets or bundles. If you do not know the code, tell us the hole size, thickness and use, and we will suggest one.
